Sept. 3 official wildfire check: Coastal campfires return, Sea Lion Mountain area restriction lifted
BCFires official-source update: BCWS says Coastal Fire Centre Category 1 campfire prohibitions are rescinded at noon Sept. 3, with larger open-fire prohibitions still in place outside Haida Gwaii, and the Sea Lion Mountain area restriction has been rescinded.
Short verdict: Official prevention/access update, useful for readers. Coastal Fire Centre Category 1 campfires return at noon Sept. 3, but larger open-fire prohibitions still remain across the rest of the Coastal Fire Centre outside Haida Gwaii. BCWS also says the Sea Lion Mountain area restriction has been lifted, with burned-area hazards still possible.

What BCWS says changed
For the Coastal Fire Centre, BCWS says Category 1 open-fire or campfire prohibitions are rescinded in all areas at 12 p.m. noon PDT on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2026.
The same bulletin says Category 2 and Category 3 prohibitions are also rescinded in the Haida Gwaii Forest District at the same time. For the rest of the Coastal Fire Centre jurisdiction, Category 2 and Category 3 open fires remain prohibited. BCWS also lists activities and equipment that remain prohibited where the larger-open-fire ban continues, including fireworks, binary exploding targets, burn barrels or burn cages, controlled air incinerators, air curtain burners and carbonizers.
For Sea Lion Mountain, BCWS says the area restriction around wildfire N41412 was rescinded at noon PT on Wednesday, Sept. 2, after fire behaviour and activity decreased and crews no longer needed to restrict public access.
What still needs a live check
- Local governments, First Nations, regional districts, improvement districts, parks and recreation managers may have rules that differ from BCWS provincial fire-centre bulletins.
- Sea Lion Mountain remains a burned-area and active-worksite environment. BCWS warns that fire-damaged trees can be unstable, ash pits can stay hot, smoke can persist inside the fire perimeter, and officials can still order people to leave if needed.
- EmergencyInfoBC and DriveBC still need to be opened live before travel, return-home decisions, or any movement near wildfire-affected areas.
