How to protect your house before wildfire season

The best wildfire preparation is boring, visible and done early: clean gutters, move combustibles, create defensible space, harden vents and plan water access before smoke is in the air.

0–1.5 metres

Keep the immediate zone non-combustible: no firewood, dry leaves, bark mulch, patio cushions or stored fuel against the house.

1.5–10 metres

Prune branches, reduce ladder fuels, keep grass cut, space shrubs and remove deadfall.

Water + power

Consider water tanks, pumps, hose kits and backup power only after understanding your local fire department’s recommendations.
