BCWS lifts several off-road vehicle prohibitions Aug. 28 — but fire bans still need live checking
BC Wildfire Service published four related notices saying off-road vehicle prohibitions are rescinded at noon Pacific time on Friday, Aug. 28, across the Kamloops Fire Centre, Southeast Fire Centre, 100 Mile House Forest District and the Coastal Fire Centre partial ORV prohibition area. The important caution: open-fire prohibitions, area restrictions, road events and local rules may still apply.
Emergency wording: If life or property is at immediate risk, call 911. To report a wildfire, call 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on a cellphone.
Short verdict: Official prevention update, useful for readers. BCWS says recent precipitation reduced wildfire risk enough to rescind these ORV prohibitions, but it also says wildfire risk remains and can change quickly. This article is not an evacuation order, road-closure notice, travel clearance, fire-boundary update or cause/arson finding.
What changed
BCWS posted the notices late Aug. 27. The effective time in the notices is noon on Friday, Aug. 28, 2026. The notices cover ORVs such as all-terrain vehicles, motorcycles and off-road side-by-side vehicles as defined under B.C. off-road vehicle rules.
The practical reader takeaway is narrow: an ORV prohibition being rescinded does not mean every kind of fire, trail, road, recreation site or local government area is automatically open. The BCWS notices repeatedly direct people to current prohibitions and restrictions before heading out.

- It is not permission to ignore local government, First Nation, park, recreation-site or private managed forest restrictions.
