Plaza of Nations fire Reel: marina warning, suspected arson report and boat-safety checklist
A Vancouver Yacht Life Instagram Reel shows flames and heavy smoke near boats on False Creek with an urgent overlay: “if you have a boat in this marina get it out now.” BCFires preserved the clip and checked the claim against reporting from CityNews, CBC/Yahoo and public fire/boating safety sources.

What the Reel shows
The captured frames show a waterfront structure, moored boats, flames at dock/building level, and a dark smoke column rising above the scene. The visible overlay reads: “7:45 PM Monday aug 31st if you have a boat in this marina get it out now.”
The Instagram caption says the fire did not look to have started from a boat in the marina and instead appeared to be at the neighbouring former Edgewater Casino / Plaza of Nations area. That is a useful eyewitness-style observation, but BCFires treats it as a social caption unless official investigators confirm the exact origin.
What official/reporting sources say
- CityNews Vancouver reported Sept. 1 that VPD believed the fire was suspected arson by an unknown individual who allegedly initiated the fire outside the building.
- CityNews also reported the building was unoccupied, no injuries had been reported, and VFRS said the fire was only on the exterior and was extinguished quickly.
- CBC/Yahoo reported photos and videos began circulating around 7:40 p.m. PT Aug. 31, and that VFRS acting assistant fire chief Ryan Cameron said crews quickly got water on the fire just after 8:10 p.m. CBC/Yahoo reported five heavy apparatuses and an airline support unit responded.
- BCFires did not locate a VPD news release for this exact incident in this pass, so police-origin/cause details are attributed to CityNews quoting VPD.
