Knox Mountain arson sentence: Stockwell Day clip, Robert Teal case and what is verified

Short answer: the new Instagram Reel is a real The Really Big Show / Stockwell Day source lead, and the central legal claim is supported by public reporting: Robert Teal / Robert Austin Teal pleaded guilty in the Knox Mountain case and was sentenced to 21 months. The part BCFires will not generalize: one confirmed arson case does not prove that most B.C. wildfires are arson.

What the new Reel/show says

The Instagram Reel from therlybigshow is captioned: “Stockwell Day: Arsonist caught for Knox Mountain fires. Sentenced to 21 months. A concerning message for wildfire safety and tourism.” Browser frame samples show The Really Big Show split-screen format and show branding. A matching public Facebook video page is titled “Arsonist Jail Time Sparks Outrage: Is Punishment Too Light?” and describes Stockwell Day reacting to the Knox Mountain sentence.

BCFires treats that clip as a commentary/source lead, not the legal source. The legal source trail is the local court and police reporting below.

Who was convicted / sentenced?

Public reporting identifies the person as Robert Teal, also reported as Robert Austin Teal in earlier charge coverage. Castanet reported that Teal, 49, pleaded guilty in July to arson damaging property and assault. The sentencing report says he received 21 months total: 18 months for arson and three months consecutive for assault, with time-served credit and probation context.

CTV Vancouver/Kelowna reported in October 2025 that Robert Austin Teal had been charged with arson and assaulting a peace officer with a weapon after fires on Kelowna’s Knox Mountain. Kelowna Capital News separately reported the July guilty plea in B.C. Provincial Court.

What happened at Knox Mountain?

The reporting trail describes an October 24, 2025 incident at Knox Mountain Park in Kelowna. Castanet and Kelowna Capital News reported construction-worker/slingshot allegations, visible flames, dry/windy conditions, fire crews extinguishing the fires, and Teal’s arrest near the Knox water reservoir area. The case is therefore properly described as an individual arson case once the guilty plea and sentencing are included.

Photo and visual-source decision

Chris asked for photos. BCFires added source visuals, but used a safety filter: public show-frame screenshots and a BCFires source-card image are used; a private/social-profile-style Facebook image of Robert Teal is not reused as an article asset. If an official police/court/media-licensable photo becomes available, it can be added with attribution.

Why this case matters

Arson is a real wildfire-risk category. BC Wildfire Service distinguishes causes through investigation, and court-supported arson cases deserve attention because deliberately set interface fires can threaten workers, homes, parks, evacuation routes and tourism. But the same case also shows why wording matters: “human-caused” does not automatically mean “arson,” and “under investigation” does not mean “someone was convicted.”

In a court-supported case like this, the arson label is fair. In an active wildfire rumour thread, “human-caused” or “under investigation” must not be turned into “arsonist” unless police, investigators or a court support it.

Any available reasons/sentencing transcript or exact probation conditions.
