### Prescribed fire notice
PEMBERTON – The BC Wildfire Service will be assisting N’Quatqua and the Sea to Sky Resource District in conducting a 5.6-hectare prescribed burn within the Pemberton Zone of the Coastal Fire Centre. This is the continuation of a prescribed fire project that was partially carried out in April 2026. The burn site will be located about two kilometres east of D’Arcy, on the southeast side of Smáxen (Anderson Lake). The exact timing of this burn will depend on suitable weather and site conditions, but could begin as early as Wednesday, September 16. Burning will proceed if conditions allow for smoke dispersal during burn operations, although smoke may also linger in the following days. Smoke may be visible from D’Arcy, Devine, Birken, and surrounding areas, and to motorists travelling along Pemberton-Portage Rd and the Highline and Haylmore Creek FSRs. Key goals of this prescribed burn include: Maintenance of forest health and a properly functioning ecosystem Reducing build-up of dead and combustible material, especially fine, woody fuels Enhancing native plants of cultural importance to N’Quatqua Enhancing wildlife habitat Enhancing firefighter safety and efficacy in the event of a future wildfire in the area Fire is a natural, normal process for many ecosystems in B.C, and N’Quatqua has utilized fire to nurture the land since time immemorial. The BC Wildfire Service is working with N’Quatqua, the Sea to Sky Natural Resource District, and other partners to help reduce the severity of future wildfires and related threats to communities in the D’Arcy area through the application of planned, intentional fire on the land base. These projects are carefully planned and proceed only under appropriate conditions to prioritize the safety of both communities and fire practitioners.

CASTLEGAR – Effective at 12:00 noon Pacific Time on Friday, September 11, 2026, Category 2 open fire will be permitted throughout the Southeast Fire Centre , which includes the Rocky Mountain Natural Resource District and the Selkirk Natural Resource District. Anyone choosing to light a Category 1 campfire or Category 2 open fire must do so responsibly and in accordance with Section 20 and Section 21 of the Wildfire Regulation : Do not burn in windy conditions Establish and maintain a fuel break Do not leave the fire unattended Ensure the fire is fully extinguished before leaving the area Carry out fire control immediately and/or report the fire if it spreads beyond the established fuel break A Category 2 open fire is a fire that burns: Material in one pile not exceeding 2 metres in height and 3 metres in width Material concurrently in 2 piles each not exceeding 2 metres in height and 3 metres in width Stubble or grass over an area that does not exceed 0.2 hectares In addition to Category 2 open fire, the following activities and equipment are also permitted: Fireworks as defined in the Fireworks Act of BC Binary exploding targets Burn barrels or burn cages of any size or description Controlled air incinerators More information about open fire and safer burning can be found on our website .
