The first group of more than 100 firefighters arrived Monday, with another 200 expected later this week, according to the B.C. government. Forests Minister Ravi Parmar welcomed the crews in a statement marking B.C. Day, thanking them for travelling to Canada to assist with the province’s wildfire response. “In our time of need, I am honoured to welcome more than 100 wildfire personnel from Mexico on Monday, Aug. 3, 2026, with more than 200 arriving later in the week,” Parmar said. “They’ve travelled from their homes to help us protect ours amidst a challenging wildfire season. As British Columbians, let’s welcome them warmly as they prepare to work alongside our BC Wildfire Service crews.” Parmar said international partnerships are an important part of responding to large wildfire seasons. “Wildfire response is built on teamwork. Whether support comes from within B.C., across Canada or around the world, every person who joins the effort strengthens our response capacity and helps ensure resources are available when and where they are needed most,” he said. “I’m proud of the wildland firefighters from Canada and Mexico who are not thinking about borders but are answering the call, as we do when our neighbours need us.” As of Monday, the BC Wildfire Service listed 126 active wildfires across the province. Nine new fires started in the previous 24 hours, while 16 were declared out. Nearly 100 wildfires have been extinguished over the past week. The wildfire service says cooler temperatures have temporarily reduced fire behaviour in some parts of the province, but southeastern B.C. continues to experience warm, dry conditions and drought. Crews are continuing to battle several significant wildfires in the Okanagan, where thousands of people have been forced from their homes in recent days. More than 2,200 properties in the Central Okanagan [have been evacuated](https://cheknews.ca/okanagan-wildfires-force-expanded-orders-alerts-as-first-nation-assesses-losses-1340082/) because of the Quilpituk Creek wildfire, while evacuation orders and alerts have also expanded around the Bradley Creek wildfire in the North Okanagan after powerful weekend winds pushed flames toward lakeside communities. Residents described fleeing through smoke and intense heat as trees burned beside roadways and firefighters cleared fallen timber to keep evacuation routes open. BC Wildfire Service officials have said the combination of prolonged drought and wind gusts reaching 115 km/h created fire behaviour unlike anything they had previously experienced. While cooler weather helped limit overnight fire growth Monday, officials warn another stretch of hot, dry and windy conditions this week could increase wildfire activity across the province. Forecasters expect temperatures to gradually climb again this week, with hot, dry and windy weather increasing the potential for new fire activity. Officials also warn that lightning-caused holdover fires may become more visible as conditions dry out.
